How Does Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Work?
Spinal surgery is the solution for many conditions when more conservative treatments, such as physical therapy and pain medication, cannot provide the relief the patient needs. We’re fortunate that minimally invasive surgery is an option for many. These procedures are significantly less traumatic to the body and offer numerous other advantages as well.
Dr. Benjamin Cohen recommends minimally invasive spinal surgery whenever possible to relieve pain and improve mobility. These techniques can repair many different problems and injuries. Dr. Cohen educates and prepares you well for your spinal surgery experience while always listening to your questions with sensitivity.
Minimally invasive surgery and your spine
Dr. Cohen makes just one or two small incisions when he performs a minimally invasive spinal procedure. This procedure is much gentler on your body than traditional open surgery, which requires a long incision that cuts right through the skin, muscles, and other tissues.
Fortunately, minimally invasive techniques spare you this trauma since they don’t get cut. Instead, Dr. Cohen makes the small incisions and carefully retracts your muscle fibers away from your spine to accommodate a slim tube that he places specially designed surgical instruments through to perform the surgery.
Many frequently performed spinal procedures can be done using minimally invasive techniques, including:
- Spinal fusion: connects two or more adjoining vertebrae for spinal stability
- Laminectomy: removal of the back of the vertebra to ease pressure
- Lumbar discectomy: herniated or degenerated disc removal
This type of surgery also successfully treats degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, instability issues and spinal fractures, spinal stenosis (nerve compression caused by spinal canal narrowing ), and spinal tumors.
Though minimally invasive surgery cannot always be performed, and some procedures still require open surgery, Dr. Cohen carefully assesses each patient’s condition and situation to determine whether they’re a candidate for a minimally invasive procedure.
Minimally invasive surgery offers you many benefits after the procedure
Much of Dr. Cohen’s enthusiasm about minimally invasive surgery centers on the very real benefits patients enjoy. These include:
- Faster healing and recovery
- Less pain
- Less bleeding
- Reduced scarring
- Fewer post-surgical complications
- Reduced risk of post-surgical infection
Most patients are relieved when they find out that the surgery they’re scheduled for can be done less invasively and look forward to a much better recovery experience.
